I’d also like to introduce Hardcore festival “Defqon.1,” which stands as an equal with Dominator. I was enthusiastic about it after hearing my friend say, “You can feel almost like a kid at this festival!” I would also like to briefly cover the history of Defqon.1. Firstly, it is the Q-dance label that organizes this event. They host such wonderful festivals as Dominator and Qlimax in the Netherlands, and enjoy overwhelming support, mainly from the younger demographic. DJs that Q-dance chooses as headliners incorporate elements of EDM, and their emblematic climax is incredibly distinctive, apparently making it easy to listen to even for the Japanese, who are unaccustomed to Hardcore. This Defqon.1 started in the Netherlands in 2003. And the Defqon.1 brand spread beyond the see and across the world, expanding to Australia in 2009, to America in 2011, and so on. It is easy to imagine how hard it is to propagate culture across the ocean, even contemporarily, with YouTube and social networking services. Surely, there is a reason why Defqon.1 spread. Allow me to introduce that appeal along with my personal experiences.
On this occasion, I went to take part in Defqon.1 with my friend and fellow photographer, Rein . I usually go backstage at venues to take pictures, and compared to the other festivals I’ve experienced, this venue was markedly larger. Accordingly, the program spanned 3 days, had 250 performing groups and boasted 80.000 visitors.
I had an impressive experience that I’d like to tell you about. What was considered to be the second stage, with an audience in the order of 10.000 people, was constructed with a helm and sword, arousing the curious sensation that a samurai was transmitting the music. DJs who play Hardcore with records in this age of mainstream compact disk jockeys, games of musical chairs with Hardcore music, a handicraft booth where you could make such things as headgear, table tennis tables, and for some reason, a Nintendo console were provided. Hardcore tends to be associated with men, but nothing could be further from the truth. Its appeal flourishes among females, too.
