アーティストの視点から観るNetflixの映画・ドラマ・ドキュメンタリー｜Vol.14 Nenashi『アトランタ』

昨今のコロナ禍中、おうちにいる時間が増えたという方も多いことだろう。

これほどまで多く、そして唐突におうちにいる時間が増えてしまうと、余暇をどう過ごしたらいいのかわからない。なかには、家でヒマを持て余してしまっている方もいらっしゃるはずだ。

かくいうQetic編集部も、おうちで何をしたらいいんだろう、なんて思いにふけりながらNetflixで配信中の映画やドラマなんかを観ていたところ、こんな考えがふと頭をよぎった。「アーティストの人たちってこの作品を観て、どんなことを考えているんだろう？」

ということで、Qeticではこの度、Netflixで現在配信中の映画やドラマ、ドキュメンタリーなどの映像作品の中から、アーティストの方々にひとつの作品を選んでいただき、その作品に対してどんな思いや感情を抱いているのかを赤裸々に語っていただいた。彼らの意見を聞いた上で作品を観れば、きっと思いを共有できるはず！

第14弾となる今回は、シンガー／ラッパー／プロデューサーのNenashiが語る『アトランタ』。

Nenashi -『アトランタ』

「This is Atlanta」と言わんばかりのドナルド・グローヴァー a.k.a. チャイルディッシュ・ガンビーノ制作総指揮・監督・脚本・主演のアメリカンコメディーテレビドラマシリーズ。一部のエピソードでは製作、監督を日本出身のヒロ・ムライが担当しており、この2人のタッグが後に“This is America”のミュージック・ビデオを作り出すことになる。

従兄弟のラッパー（ペーパー・ボーイ）とマネージャー（アーン）を通じて、アメリカ南部アトランタの音楽シーンやアメリカの社会問題を描いている。自身が育ったアトランタ周辺をドナルド・グローバーのフィルターを通して見ることで、好きにもなるし、嫌な部分に対してもいろいろな感情が湧いてくる。地元のスポーツチームや食文化も多少ピックアップされるが、やはり随所で使われる音楽が肝になり物語を進めていく。

1990年代後半に流行ったスナップミュージックに敬意を払いつつ生まれたトラップミュージックは、アトランタ発祥。本編には、全米でも人気のミーゴース（MIGOS）も出演したり、アウトキャスト（OUTKAST）のポスターも見かける等、地元愛を感じさせる。また韓国のラッパー、キースエイプ（Kieth Ape）の曲もピックアップするなど、トラップミュージックが人種を超えて広がっている事をアピールしているのではないだろうか。

もちろんヒップホップ・ラップだけでなく、スティービー・ワンダーやビル・ウィザース（RIP)の曲も使用されるなど、R&B/ソウルミュージックも物語を色付けている。これらの音楽が「光」とするなら、人種差別、銃社会、麻薬等といった「影」の部分にも痛烈な描写と時折ユーモアを交えて独特な仕上がりに引き込まれていく。

アメリカ南部の黒人に対するステレオタイプに向き合いつつ、「生きる為には仕方がない」という状況をくぐり抜けていく、ペーパーボーイと彼のクルーの今後から目が離せない。また、家族や確実に信頼できる人に対する愛も描かれているのは、制作陣で参加している、実弟や長きのクリエイティブパートナー（ヒロ・ムライ）への思いでもあるのかもしれない。

現在シリーズ2まで配信中。全4シリーズ予定なので続きが楽しみです。

Black Lives Matter

“This is Atlanta”.

An American comedy drama television series mainly created, directed, starred by Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino which reflects on the up and coming of a rapper in the Atlanta music scene.

Some of the episodes are produced by Hiro Murai, a Japanese director who later tags up with Glover to create Childish Gambino’s “This is America”.
The rapper (Paper Boi) and his cousin (Earn) goes through a series of events being in Atlanta.
Watching the series through Glover’s eyes, where he spent his years growing up, you begin to like and hate the world in Atlanta.

Although some episodes pick up the major sport teams (i.e. Hawks, Falcons) and local cuisine, many of the stories are guided into by music. Paying respect to Snap music from the late 1990s, Trap music plays a part in Atlanta’s stage. Having cameo appearances by MIGOS (Atlanta Hip Hop Trio) and recognizing posters of OUTKAST (also Atlanta’s finest) and featuring more local rapper’s tunes shows the love for Atlanta’s music scene. But in one of the episodes, South Korean Rapper “Keith Ape”‘s song playing in the background is probably mentioning that this music scene has reached beyond race and borders.

You will also notice that this series also pays tribute to R&B/Soul music. Many of the stories progress on Stevie Wonder and Bill Wither’s (RIP) classic tunes which add a sentimental texture.
If this music is the “light”, it also focuses on the “dark” side. Telling about racism, gun control, drug abuse etc. with real and sometimes too real descriptions. I can perceive it as humor at times but occasionally have mixed feelings.

Facing the stereotype against African Americans in the south and the message of “do whatever it takes to live” mentality, I can’t stop watching what’s going to happen to Paper Boi and his crew.
In addition I feel like this is a message to his trusted family and close ones. Glover’s brother Stephen (screen writer) and creative partner Hiro Murai (director) join forces on this award winning series.
It’s said to be there are 4 series in total so looking forward to how it will flourish in season 3.
