演奏力のみならず、ステージ上でのウィットに富んだユーモアもしばしば話題となった。中でも有名なのは、1963年11月4日に王室主催の音楽演奏会で、ロックバンドとして初めてライヴをおこなった時のこと“ツイスト・アンド・シャウト”の直前のMCでジョンが、「安い席の人は拍手を、高い席の人は宝石をジャラジャラ鳴らしてください。」と発言し、観客の笑いを呼んだのは有名な話だ（『ザ・ビートルズ・アンソロジー1』収録）。

デビュー以来の悲願だった「アメリカ進出」に心血を注いだ1964年には、有名バラエティ番組『エド・サリヴァン・ショー』に3週連続で出演する。初登場時には、当時のアメリカの人口の60パーセントに相当する7300万人が、その放送を観たと言われており、ビートルズが演奏している間は青少年による犯罪件数がほぼ0件だったという逸話も残している。

そんなアメリカでの最大のライヴといえば、1965年8月15日におこなったシェイ・スタジアム公演だ。史上初の球場コンサートであり、史上最大の野外コンサートとなった本公演には55,600名ものファンが集結。本番中ドラッグでぶっ飛んでいたジョンが、VOXのオルガンを肘で弾く“I’m Down”など圧巻のパフォーマンスを披露する。以降、大規模な集客を必要とする際には野球場が使われるようになるが、会場の規模に対して満足のいく音響設備が整わず、バンドは次第にフラストレーションを募らせていく。

1966年6月には待望の来日を果たし、日本武道館にて3回の公演を行なった。司会を務めたのはE・H・エリックで、オープニング・アクトは内田裕也や尾藤イサオ、ザ・ドリフターズらが勤めている。このときの4人の演奏は、お世辞にも良かったとは言えず（特に初日）、前述した『BBCセッション』での名演と比較すると、とても同じバンドとは思えないものだった。当時のPA技術では、スタジアムを埋め尽くすオーディエンスの歓声を浴びながら、自分の声や演奏を聞き取るのは至難の技であり、そのような環境で演奏しているうちに、「音を合わせる」ということが出来なくなってしまっていた。「リスペクトを持って静かに演奏を聴く」習慣がある日本人の前で演奏したことで、演奏の「アラ」に本人たち自身も気がついてしまったのだろう。このときの経験はバンドにも大きな痛手となり、フィリピンでの冷遇や、アメリカで広がった「ビートルズ排斥運動」（ジョンの「キリスト発言が原因」なども重なったため、ライヴ活動に嫌気がさした4人はその頃ハマっていたスタジオワークへと、さらにのめり込んでいくようになる。
